The artworks of Zoobs are the perfect match for the swanky interior of the Out Hotel on West 42nd Street: sleek, sexy and sophisticated. As suggested by the title, the artist’s inaugural New York show includes Zoobs classics as well as more recent works specifically produced for this exhibition.
Part illustration, part photograph, Zoobs’ seductive portraits are pop, fashion and Hollywood glamour combined with a hint of darkness: death, morality and religion have been recurring themes throughout his career. Beauty in and of itself is neutral and can be a conduit for both virtue and sin. Therefore, at times, the viewer is left guessing as to what it is that gives Zoobs’ portraits their edge.
Whether immortalising the icons of the Eighties or his muses, Zoobs’ portraits are a search for perfection. The creative process is all about knowing when to control and when to let go. Zoobs shoots his images freely, without forcing direction. It is his experience as an art director, editing and reworking the images after they have been shot, that allows him to achieve what he is after.
‘Consolidate The Experience’ is showing until the end of May 2014 at The Out NYC, 510 W 42nd Street New York NY 10036.
