British master perfumer Roja Dove is redefining the modern day perfumery experience by testing the notion that luxury has not lost its luster. Deemed “The Nose” because he can identify blindfolded hundreds of scents, he is a sought after authority and educator on fragrances. Remarkable to his success is that his fragrances are not advertised.
Working for 20 years with the House of Guerlain, a perfume dynasty, , he is the first non-family member to become the Global Ambassador of the company. In 2011, Dove launched his own collection, Roja Parfums. Despite the rise of celebrity-created perfumes and mass-produced fragrances, Dove’s success is maintained through innovation and respect for traditions. Scents are personal calling cards that reveal what’s underneath the veil and invite others to subtly take notice. Dove knows that the artistry of the perfect scent has the power to evoke the past, revel in the present and change your future.
One of the best experiences is discovering something new that has a mark of distinction and then sharing it through word of mouth. It was on a stroll through Harrods that I encountered Roja Parfums. Vetiver, a fragrance for men, evokes the memory of when a woman holds onto a lover’s shirt just to capture his scent when they part; seduction in a bottle. Besides the intriguing names and captivating smells, the notable attention to detail given to the bottle catches the eye. Each bottle is adorned with 14 hand-placed Swarovski crystals. The gold screen imprinted writing is done by hand. The bottles are made with the finest glass from France so that every engagement from touch to dab is a sensory experience.
To truly understand the man behind the name there is his scent imprint, the amber-hued Roja Haute Luxe. A traditional chypré of bergamot, oakmoss, and labdanum notes is uniquely infused with 24-karat gold leafs. The freshness of rose, jasmine, and ylang ylang are emitted while balanced by vanilla and patchouli. Dove’s scent imprints convey that he is genuine, mysterious, and rare. Haute Luxe is released each year in limited quantities of only 50 bottles and quickly sells out.
Dove’s new collection, Profumi D’Amore, tells the story of love as it progresses with Amore Mio (My Love), Ti Amo (I Love You), and Un Amore Eterno (I Will Love You Forever). The entire collection builds in intensity at each phase of the story with skillful composition using the Oriental fragrance family. Ambergris, cacao, and vanilla notes lie at the core of all three fragrances because of their sensual qualities. This is an innovative creation by Dove and pays great respect to Guerlain’s Shalimar (Temple of Love), the first Oriental perfume that captivated the world in 1921. The collection is aimed for the client to “be the flame not the moth”.
