Not always a white wedding…

Not always a white wedding…

When it comes to finding ‘The One’ (we mean the dream wedding dress, of course), a classic white or cream wedding gown will always be in style. However, a large number of brides can’t resist a little wedding-day subversion when it comes to their frock – including the slew of recent celebrity brides who tied the knot this summer.

Exhibit A: the perennially chic Olivia Palermo, who donned a Carolina Herrera three-piece design to her countryside nuptials to Johannes Huebl in Bedford, New York in June. What looked like a dress at first glance was in fact a long-sleeved cream cashmere sweater with scattered ostrich feathers teamed with co-ordinating shorts and an elaborate tulle overskirt with floral details on the hem.

Across the pond, model Poppy Delevingne wore an elaborate short-sleeved beaded Chanel Couture gown to her May wedding to James Cook. Featuring a detachable train, Poppy’s multi-purpose frock was classic and regal by day for the church ceremony, and the perfect party frock for the reception and after-party.

Poppy didn’t stop there, however. At a second wedding celebration in Marrakesh, she wore an ethereal, boho-chic 70s-inspired Pucci gown with colourful flowers, a move echoed by Kim Kardashian when she swapped her Givenchy couture dress for a beaded Balmain mini-dress at her wedding to Kanye West. Why settle for one gown when you can have two?

While these brides all wore shades of white, actress Piper Perabo proved that you don’t have to at her July nuptials to Stephen Kay. She chose a silver animal print Michael Kors gown (previously worn by Naomi Campbell and Jennifer Lopez), accessorised with a gold veil.

If multiple dress changes, coloured gowns or shorts on your big day don’t excite you, brides in the US have fallen head over heels for short wedding dresses. Other big trends are statement embellished and illusion backs and off-the-shoulder dresses for a romantic silhouette.
