“We don’t believe anyone who is truly aware of what is going on in the world would want to turn their heads and support a slave trade economy,” says the New Zealand-based fashion line, Kowtow Clothing, on their website. We couldn’t agree more. So thank goodness that Kowtow Clothing’s new collection is now available online and deliveries are made worldwide.
Fair trade, 100% organic cotton is only a click away, as are the men’s and women’s ranges that use such cotton. The menswear range is smaller than the womenswear, offering just a few select items, but women can choose from prints, shirts, dresses, jackets, cardigans and bottoms. There is an accessories range as well as (our favourite because it’s so easy to do and so hard to get right) a brilliant ‘building blocks’ range of exquisitely simple vests, long-sleeved tops and scarves.
It’s all very affordable too, especially since the price is in New Zealand dollars. But most important are Kowtow’s ethical credentials. This is a company founded on sustainability, using only 100% cotton certified by the Fairtrade labelling Organisation. This means that, among other benefits, the minimum price goods are sold at will cover production and provide a sustainable livelihood for the cotton producers. Kowtow’s cotton is also only 100% organic (as certified by SKAL International), the benefits of which include the prohibition of genetically modified seeds and that soil is conserved through crop rotation.
The garments are made in a factory in Kolkata, India, which sponsors projects such as Girls Education, Cow Shed and the Cow Donation programs in the farmers villages. Employees are looked after and children all receive free schooling. For a full list of other benefits, visit www.kowtowclothing/pages/sustainability.
