Island Retreat

Island Retreat

If it’s a winter holiday you’re after, the Shanti Maurice in Mauritius is launching a series of specialist wellness and beauty retreats that could be exactly what you need to keep you going through until the spring thaw.

Appealing to holidaymakers with a purpose (albeit a fairly gentle one), these brand new retreats involve specialist practitioners, lots of pampering and exceptionally beautiful surroundings. It’s also a luxury location that hasn’t lost its focus on sustainability; from sourcing the majority of the restaurants’ ingredients from the island’s farmers and fishermen, to supporting village crafts by supplying hand-woven beach carriers, the team at Shanti Maurice has taken enormous care to work with the community both to respect its surroundings and to minimise any negative environmental impact.

In October 2012, guests can spend four days energising tired bodies with pilates – either improving an existing practice or immersing themselves for the first time in the discipline. A Romana Pilates Grand Master, Cynthia Lochard, will start the weekend with an introductory workshop to explain the method of Romana Pilates, highlighting benefits and giving an overview of the equipment used. She will be available for personalised sessions and will work in collaboration with Ingrid Rey from Pilates & Yoga Studio in Mauritius, as well as Dheeraj Singh, Shanti Maurice’s own trained instructor.

If you’re inclined towards something less physical, Shanti Maurice is hosting a non-religious spiritual retreat in November where guests will apparently be encouraged to ‘release their inner spirituality’ (don’t worry – being spiritual here is not synonymous with giving up creature comforts). This week-long break will focus on spiritual, mental and physical well-being by way of activities such as yoga, Reiki healing and rejuvenating spa sessions. The focal point of the retreat will be the ‘Inner Engineering’ programme designed by a renowned spiritual leader, Sadhuru Jaggi Vasudev, which will help guests to re-establish a balance in their life.

And finally, if you want a pre-Christmas treat, in December the hotel is hosting some prestigious Bobbi Brown Make-Up developers and artists. Armed with beauty tips and make-over kits, they will give guests personal training sessions in how to do make-up and what exactly they should be using.

The Spiritual Retreat costs from €2,600 (around £2,036) per person and includes up to eight hours of daily sessions. For more information please see
