If you had to name one thing no fashion designer could have predicted, it would be the face mask. Previously associated with medical procedures and London tourists, this accessory has become a mainstay in all bags and pockets. As a result, a number of designers have developed face coverings for all occasions. There have also been new designers popping up, ensuring we have face masks to suit all tastes. A selection of our favourite ethical and sustainable masks are below.

www.birdsong.london For women who expect more from their wardrobe, this company designs original wardrobe staples that are ethical, sustainable and made by talented women paid a fair wage. They use a range of autumn colours, including burgundy, teal and burnt orange, in their striped and spotty face masks. The material is biodegradable, double-layered, pleated and elasticated loops to fit a range of sizes. Cost £14 each. 

www.daiwear.com Dai Wear, based at E1 Studios in Whitechapel, east London, has launched a range of luxury protective face masks, which are eco friendly and machine washable. Cotton styles feature a performance anti-bacterial silver-fibre lining. This fashion brand has not only produced hundreds of masks for charities and companies, they have donated thousands of pounds’ worth of easy-wash trousers to frontline NHS staff and launched a ‘buy a pair, donate a pair’ initiative to double their efforts. Masks start at £12 each.

These masks are 100% OEKO-TEX-certified cotton, which means it has been tested for harmful substances. They are made from materials sourced and manufactured in Poland. A range of primary and secondary colours with beautiful designs, including scarlet pebbles, flecked emeralds and mandevilla vine. All their packaging is recyclable and biodegradable; they use plastic-free tape and envelopes from sustainable eucalyptus trees. Cost £12 each.

A large choice of designs ranging from leopard print and dogtooth to plain masks including lilac and royal blue.
