Eco Fashion Week

Eco Fashion Week

Quite fittingly, the sixth Eco Fashion Week in Vancouver takes place during Earth Week, from 21 to 24 April. This Eco Fashion Week will feature five free seminars on sustainability in the garment and textile industry as well as fashion showcase and runway events with 25 designers and stylists. The event continues to grow each season, establishing itself as the world’s largest fashion week event dedicated solely to showcasing and advancing sustainability in fashion.

For the first time, Eco Fashion Week will be kicked off by the industry seminars on Sunday 21 April. The seminars are an important educational component to the event, providing information on the current issues, challenges and opportunities in the garment and textile supply chain. Speakers this season include Wes Baker from Debrand Service, Mary Hanlon of Social Alterations, designer Nicole Bridger, WGSN’s Carly Stojsic and Eco Fashion Week founder Myriam Laroche. Because space is limited, pre-registration is recommended for the free seminars and can be completed online. That evening, Nicole Bridger will showcase her latest collection at the Portside pub in Vancouver.

The first day of the event is once again presented by Value Village, and features two runway ‘thrift chic’ challenges. The first showcases three stylists who have each been given a CAD$500 gift card to Value Village and challenged with putting together a collection. The second runway presentation is the return of the 68 pound challenge, designed and created by Kim Cathers. In an attempt to draw attention to the amount of clothing thrown away each year by North Americans, estimated at 68 pounds per person, Kim Cathers has been once again challenged to create a full collection out of 68 pounds of textiles from Value Village, and those considered unsuitable for resale.

The evenings of 23 and 24 April are packed with more incredible sustainable brands, stylists, and vintage collections; an amazing mix of all the eco aspects of the current fashion industry. Highlights include Bhana Design, Svensk, RISE, Elroy, My Sister’s Closet, and collectives from Ethik-BGC and Circle Craft with Adhesif and Fiveleft Leather.

Buyers and media can still register online for the event. Tickets are on sale for the Nicole Bridger show as well as for each of the Eco Fashion Week runway presentations.
