It started with a guy (Toby) and his friend (James) selling Toby’s artworks in markets. Humble huh? But from that, the Illustrate marketplace has grown exponentially and now connects over 20 creatives to the people who love their work. There are now three Illustrate stores, two in Bristol and one in Cardiff, as well as the online marketplace involving photographers, artisan soap makers and traditional artists.
Here you’ll find men and women’s sweatshirts, hoodies, caps and beanies, as well as water bottles and phone cases, wristwear, art supplies and other interesting and stylish lifestyle items like some original and fun men’s grooming gear.
It doesn’t stop here either: Illustrate is committed to continue growth; to supporting more and more creatives and offering sustainable alternatives to the typical fast fashion or unsustainable accessory items.
“At Illustrate we strive to create the best, most innovative work possible whilst having the least negative impact on the world around us,” say the founders. “This is why we insist on proof of worker’s rights from our suppliers, and insist on using organic or recycled materials wherever possible as well as always trying to minimise both plastic and animal products throughout our supply chain.”
It wasn’t enough, however. The team behind Illustrate decided they needed their products to have deeper meaning, and wanted to tie them in with positive action so that when you purchase an item you’re getting more than just what you order. That’s why:
- Each water bottle sold 10% of the sale goes towards FRANK Water, a local charity working to provide clean water & sanitation to deprived regions of India & Nepal.
- For every wooden item sold on Illustrate; skateboards, art decks & phone cases, Illustrate commit to planting a tree in partnership with global NGO One Tree Planted.
- Both the children’s clothing & notebooks/sketchbooks operate on a ‘1 for 1’ basis so that for each one sold, item of clothing or notebook, Illustrate will donate one to those in need…
