It was only while planning a treat for my own mother on Mother’s Day (26 March) that I had an uncanny thought. Surely this auspicious Sunday is also my pregnant wife’s first Mother’s Day too?

But what could I get her as a present, I wondered? A spa trip perhaps? Or a meal out? Neither of these were spot-on and picking a gift for a pregnant woman isn’t always easy. One day she wants her body kneaded and the other she can’t bear to be touched. One day she wants french fries, and the next French haute cuisine.

And that’s where The Mother Box comes in: luxury boxes designed to guide and support women through all stages of their pregnancy. The company launched earlier this month, co-founded by Alexis Stickland and Beccy Hands, a former midwife and doula team who between them have five children and 25 years’ experience supporting women through the pre and post natal period. There are six different boxes in this first collection, which include The Early Pregnancy Box, The Pregnancy and Birth Box and The Brand New Mother Box. “Everything in each box has been carefully selected using our professional experience and are all accompanied by a lovely booklet bursting with information, advice and the practical knowledge we have gained from being a part of the mama tribe ourselves,” says Beccy.

Yet while each box is filled slightly differently, they all share one thing: a focus on guiding pregnant and new mums towards self-care. “The preparation and anticipation of a new baby can be all consuming,” explains Alexis. “Nurseries are painted, buggies are tested and drawers are quickly filled with neatly folded crisp white baby grows. But the birth of a baby changes everything and we need to support and empower women during their incredible motherhood journey.”
